What are Connectors?
Almost everything you need is already in Double. But every so often there's one piece that isn't — a Slack thread, a note in Notion, something in your CRM. Connectors let Ask Double reach those tools directly.
For example:
"I'm meeting with this client in 10 minutes. Catch me up on what we've discussed recently."
"Pull current headcount from our payroll tracker and add it as a metrics variable."
"What's the deal stage and last activity for this client in HubSpot?"
Built-in connectors: Slack, Notion, HubSpot, and Google — plus any MCP server you add by URL (see Custom connectors below).
Connectors are built on MCP (Model Context Protocol), the open standard for connecting AI assistants to outside systems. Each connector is an MCP server, and the read and write tools listed under it are that server's MCP tools.
For the full list of tools Ask Double can use inside Double, see Ask Double's Tool Reference.
Adding a connector
Go to Ask Double → Personalization → Connectors, click + Add connector, choose a tool, and complete its sign-in flow. Tools you've already connected won't appear in the list. If sign-in fails or you cancel, nothing is added — just try again.
Connectors are per-user. Each connector you add is visible and editable only to you — teammates don't see it, even on the same client, and each person connects their own. It also inherits your permissions in that tool, so Ask Double can only do what your account can already do there.
Custom connectors (bring your own MCP server)
If a tool you rely on isn't a built-in connector, you can connect it directly as long as it exposes a remote MCP server.
Go to Ask Double → Personalization → Connectors
Click + Add connector → + Add connector (again)
Enter a name and the Remote MCP server URL (both required)
Optionally tick Add to trusted connectors (admins only — see below)
Click Save
Once connected, the connector shows its status and the tools it provides, and you can set per-tool permissions exactly like a built-in connector.
If the connector doesn't save: a malformed URL is flagged inline before any attempt is made; a well-formed but unreachable URL fails with an error and nothing is saved; a URL you've already connected shows "This connector already exists."
Not sure whether a tool offers an MCP server? Check the tool's documentation for "MCP" or "remote MCP server" — most tools that support it publish the URL there.
Managing a connector
Each connector shows its name, an on/off toggle, and a … menu.
Action | What it does |
Toggle off | Makes the connector unavailable to Ask Double without removing it. |
Reconnect | Runs the sign-in flow again — use this if access expired or permissions changed. |
Disconnect | Removes the connector. You'll be asked to confirm. |
If access is revoked or expires on the other tool's side, the connector shows a reconnect state rather than failing quietly.
Controlling what Ask Double can do
Click the chevron on a connector to see the tools it provides, grouped into Read tools (searching, reading, listing) and Write tools (sending, creating, updating). The number beside each heading is how many tools that group contains. Every tool falls in exactly one group, so you always know whether you're allowing Ask Double to look or to act.
Each tool has three settings, shown as icons at the right of its row:
Icon | Setting | What happens |
Checkmark | Always allow | Ask Double uses the tool as needed, without asking. |
Hand | Always ask | Ask Double requests approval before each call. Declining just continues the chat. |
Circle with a slash | Blocked | Ask Double can't use the tool at all. |
Use the dropdown in a group's header to set every tool in that group at once, then adjust individual tools from there. A common setup is Always allow for reads and Always ask for writes — Ask Double can go find context on its own, but checks with you before it changes anything.
Changes take effect immediately, including in open chats — no need to reconnect.
Admin controls: who can connect what
Custom connectors are off by default for non-admins. Admins decide who can add them and which specific ones everyone may use.
Practice settings → AI settings → AI & Agents → Manage AI permissions (Quick link).
You'll find two controls:
Setting | What it controls | Options |
Add custom connectors | Who can add any MCP server by URL | Standard & above / Manager & above / Admin & above |
Manage approved connectors | Who can connect the approved connectors (built-in or custom) | Standard & above / Manager & above / Admin & above |
FAQ
Does Double support MCP?
Yes. Connectors are MCP connectors. Each one is a managed MCP server, and the read and write tools under it are its MCP tools.
Can I connect my own MCP server?
Yes. See Custom connectors above. Your admin controls whether you have permission to add one.
What if I ask for something using a blocked tool?
It won't run. Ask Double will let you know the tool isn't available.
Can Ask Double delete things?
Only where a tool exposes a delete action and you've set it to allow. Built-in connectors don't expose delete actions. A custom MCP server might, so review its Write tools when you connect it and set anything destructive to "Always ask" or "Blocked."
Can my firm share one connector?
Each teammate signs in to their own account, but admins can put a connector on the trusted list so everyone can add it with one click.
Why can't I see "Add custom connector"?
Your admin hasn't granted your role the Custom connectors permission. Ask them to enable it or add the server you need to the trusted list.
