Emails: Syncing Folders & Label Structures

Ensuring complex folder/label structures are properly updated and maintained in Emails.

Updated this week

To better support large or complex folder/label setups, the Inbox now caches your folder/label structure when an inbox is connected, helping improve performance and prevent sync issues with large or complex inboxes.

  • The inbox's folder/label structure is saved when you connect an inbox.

  • Manually refresh the folders/labels at any time.

  • Syncing now works even with large or extra complex structures.

How it works

Connecting a new inbox

  • Double will automatically sync your folder/label structure.

  • You’ll see a banner letting you know syncing is in progress.

  • That specific inbox will be temporarily unavailable until sync finishes.

  • Other connected inboxes remain usable during this time.

Refreshing folders manually

Click the “Refresh folders/labels” option from the inbox page at any point to ensure your folders/labels are up-to-date.

This refresh icon looks like a little circle and appears when hovering the mouse over the "Labels" row.

Folder sync status

While syncing, the folder’s sync icon will spin, and a banner will appear.

Once syncing is complete, the folders appear in the sidebar and can be used immediately. If syncing fails, you’ll see an error message with the next steps.

Best practices

Creating folders in Double

While folders/labels created in your email client (like Gmail or Outlook) will be pulled into Double on next sync, we recommend creating new folders/labels directly in Double for the most seamless experience. This avoids delays and ensures instant availability.

Frequently asked questions (FAQs)

Can I use my inbox while folders are syncing?

  • Only if it's an existing connection. New connections are locked until the folder structure finishes syncing.

What if I have multiple inboxes?

  • Each inbox syncs independently. Only the one being updated is temporarily locked.

Will I see when my folders were last synced?

  • Yes, the tooltip of the "Refresh" button will show you when your folders/labels were last synced in Double.
